SASSA Status Meanings Explained: Pending, Approved, Declined and Referred

A SASSA status result can be confusing when it contains only one or two words. This guide explains the most common SRD R370 status meanings in plain English and gives the next safe step for each result.

This is independent guidance, not an official SASSA service. Never enter your ID number, OTP or banking password on this website.

Application Complete

This generally means the application or reapplication information has been submitted. It does not mean every month is approved. SASSA assesses SRD eligibility monthly, so continue checking the official portal for the result of each period.

Pending

A pending status means the monthly verification has not been finalised. SASSA may still be checking identity, income, social-grant or other eligibility information. The practical step is to wait and check the same month again later. Avoid creating a duplicate application.

Approved

Approved means the applicant qualified for the month shown. Next, check whether a payment date appears. If the month says approved but does not show a pay day, the payment may not yet have been processed. Read why an approved SRD status may have no payment date.

Paid

A paid result indicates that SASSA has released the payment through the selected method. Bank processing and the time needed for funds to reflect can vary. Use the date shown on the official portal as the starting point, then contact SASSA if the payment remains missing after a reasonable processing period.

Declined

Declined means the application did not pass the assessment for that month. The portal should show a reason. If the reason appears wrong, an applicant can use the official appeal process for that particular month. An appeal is not the same as submitting a new SRD application. Follow the steps in our SASSA appeal guide.

Bank Details Pending

The application may not yet have a valid payment method on record. Submit or correct banking details only through the official SRD portal. The account should belong to the applicant, and verification can take time. See how to update SASSA banking details without using a third party.

Bank Verification Pending or Failed

SASSA or its verification partners may still be checking the bank-account information, or the details may not match the applicant. Review the account holder’s name and account information carefully. Do not send a bank password, card PIN or OTP to anyone.

Referred

A referred status means the application needs further review. It is not automatically a final decline. Check for an official request and make sure the mobile number linked to the application works. Our dedicated guide explains what referred means on an SRD status.

Identity Verification or e-KYC Required

The applicant may need to complete an identity check before assessment or payment can continue. Use only the process reached from the official SRD website or a message that can be independently verified. Read our SASSA identity verification guide.

Alternative Income Source Identified

This decline reason usually means the assessment detected funds or income above the applicable test for the month. If the result is incorrect, gather accurate information and use the official appeal route. Do not invent documents or pay someone to “clear” a status.

UIF Registered or NSFAS Registered

These results indicate that a verification source identified UIF or NSFAS-related information that may affect eligibility. For a UIF result, read our detailed UIF registered decline and appeal guide, check the relevant official record and appeal each affected month if the result is incorrect. Always provide truthful details when requested.

Age Outside Range

The identification record suggests the applicant falls outside the age requirement for the SRD grant. Confirm that the ID number was entered correctly. If the official record is wrong, contact the relevant authority and SASSA rather than submitting false information.

Cancelled

A cancelled status means the SRD application is no longer active. If cancellation was accidental and the official portal offers reinstatement, follow that process. Do not start with an unofficial “reactivation” service.

How to Respond to Any Status Safely

  1. Check the exact month and exact wording on the official SRD website.
  2. Read the reason before taking action.
  3. Use the official appeal route for a disputed declined month.
  4. Keep the registered phone number available for verification.
  5. Never share an OTP, PIN or online-banking password.

Quick FAQ

Can different months show different results?

Yes. SRD eligibility is assessed monthly, so one month may be approved while another is pending or declined.

Should I reapply when a month is pending?

Usually no. A pending monthly assessment should be checked again. Follow only the current instruction shown on the official portal.

Where do I check?

Use the official SASSA SRD portal. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our SASSA status check 2026 guide.

Rules and wording can change. Always treat the official portal as the final source for your application.
