SASSA SRD Reapplication: How to Reconfirm or Reinstate a Stopped Grant
Has your SRD R370 grant stopped, or has SASSA asked you to reconfirm your details? Most approved beneficiaries do not need to do anything, since SASSA reassesses eligibility automatically each month. This guide explains the specific situations where you do need to act, and the difference between reconfirming, reinstating and starting a completely new application.

Quick Facts
- Most approved SRD beneficiaries are reassessed automatically every month and do not need to manually reapply
- “Reconfirm” and “reinstate” are separate official SASSA SRD processes, and neither is the same as appealing a declined application
- Both are completed on the official SRD website using your South African ID number and a one-time PIN sent by SMS
- If you want to challenge a Declined status, see our SASSA Appeal guide instead of this page
What “Reapply,” “Reconfirm” and “Reinstate” Actually Mean
These three words get used interchangeably online, but they point to different situations and, on the official SASSA SRD website, different forms.
- Reapply / new application — starting completely from scratch. This is for someone who has never applied for the SRD R370 grant before.
- Reconfirm — SASSA asking an existing applicant to re-verify their identity or banking details, usually because a status message has specifically told them to. On the official portal this uses your ID number and mobile number.
- Reinstate — restarting a grant that was previously approved and paying, but has since stopped. On the official portal this uses your ID number and the phone number you originally applied with.
- Appeal — formally challenging one specific declined decision through the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). This is a different process, covered in full on our SASSA Appeal guide.
Do You Actually Need to Do Anything?
For most approved beneficiaries, no. SASSA re-checks eligibility against income, UIF and other government databases as part of a standard monthly reassessment, which is also why some approved beneficiaries see their status change from one month to the next without having done anything themselves. You only need to act if one of the specific situations below applies to you.
When You Do Need to Reconfirm or Reinstate
- Your SRD status message specifically asks you to reconfirm your identity or banking details
- A grant that was previously approved and paying has stopped for one or more months with no explanation on your status
- You changed your ID document type, banking details or mobile number and the change needs to be reverified
- Your application has been inactive for an extended period and no longer shows a current status
If none of these describe your situation, checking your current status is usually the better next step. See our SASSA Status Check guide before starting a reconfirmation or reinstatement.
Reconfirm, Reinstate or Appeal — Which One Do You Need?
Getting this right matters, since each one is a different process on the official portal. Use whichever line below matches your situation.
- Status says Declined and you believe the decision is wrong — use SASSA Appeal, not this page.
- Status message specifically says to reconfirm your identity or banking details — use the reconfirmation steps below.
- Grant was approved and paying, then simply stopped — use the reinstatement steps below.
- You have never applied for SRD before — see our SRD R370 Grant guide for the first-time application process instead.
How to Reconfirm or Reinstate Your SRD Grant Online
Both processes are completed on the same official website and follow a similar pattern.
- Go to the official SASSA SRD website.
Make sure you are on the official srd.sassa.gov.za site rather than an unofficial copy before entering any details. - Enter your South African ID number.
Use the same 13-digit ID number linked to your original SRD application. - Choose the option that matches your situation.
Reconfirmation asks for the mobile number currently linked to your application. Reinstatement asks for the phone number you originally used when you applied, which may be different if that number has since changed. - Enter the one-time PIN sent by SMS.
Keep the phone linked to your application on hand, since the session can time out while you wait for the SMS. - Follow the on-screen prompts to complete any identity or banking checks requested.
Only enter information directly on the official site — never through a link sent by someone claiming to help you “fast-track” the process. - Submit, then check your status again after a few days.
Use our Status Check guide to read what your new status means.
What Happens After You Submit, and How Long It Can Take
SASSA does not publish one universal turnaround time that applies to every reconfirmation or reinstatement, so treat any specific number of days you see elsewhere with caution. As one example of how these checks work in practice, a SASSA regional spokesperson has previously described identity-verification SMS links as needing to be actioned within 72 hours of being sent, with delayed grants for anyone who lets the link expire. Timelines for banking and identity re-verification can vary, so check your status a few days after submitting rather than assuming something is wrong immediately.
Once your grant shows as active again, payment itself follows SASSA’s normal monthly schedule rather than a separate date for reinstated cases. See our SASSA Payment Dates page for the exact day your grant type pays this month.
Common Mistakes That Delay Reconfirmation
- Using an old or inactive mobile number, so the one-time PIN never arrives
- Letting an SMS verification link expire before acting on it
- Submitting details through an unofficial third-party site instead of srd.sassa.gov.za directly
- Assuming a stopped grant is the same as a declined application, when they need different fixes
Scam Warning
Reconfirming or reinstating an SRD grant is free and only happens on the official SASSA SRD website. Be cautious of anyone on WhatsApp, social media or in person offering to “fast-track” a reconfirmation for a fee, and never share your one-time PIN, ID number or banking PIN with anyone claiming to be able to speed up the process on your behalf.
If Reconfirming or Reinstating Does Not Work
If your status changes to Declined after going through this process, the next step is different again. See our SASSA Appeal guide to challenge the decision, or check whether one of our specific decline-reason guides matches what your status says, including UIF Registered Decline and Identity Verification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to reapply for SRD every month?
No. Most approved beneficiaries are reassessed automatically each month. You only need to reconfirm or reinstate if your status specifically asks you to, or if a previously paying grant has stopped.
What is the difference between reconfirming and reinstating my SRD grant?
Reconfirmation is for re-verifying your identity or banking details when your status asks you to, using your current mobile number. Reinstatement is for restarting a grant that has stopped after previously being approved and paid, using the phone number you originally applied with.
Is there a fee to reconfirm or reinstate my SASSA SRD grant?
No. The official process on srd.sassa.gov.za is free. Anyone asking for payment to reconfirm, reinstate or “fast-track” your SRD grant is not part of the official process.
My grant was declined, not stopped. Should I use this page?
No. A Declined status is challenged through a formal appeal, not through reconfirmation or reinstatement. See our SASSA Appeal guide for that process.
