SASSA Grants: Types, Eligibility & Payment Information
South Africa’s social grant system, administered by SASSA (the South African Social Security Agency), supports millions of people through several distinct grant types. Below is an overview of each major grant category, including general eligibility guidance, how payments work, and where to find verified payment dates. SA Grant Dates is an independent resource and is not affiliated with SASSA or any government department.
Permanent Grants vs the SRD R370 Grant
SASSA’s grants generally fall into two groups. Six of the seven grant types below — Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency and War Veterans — are permanent social grants, paid on a fixed monthly date and reviewed periodically. The SRD R370 grant works differently: it is a temporary relief payment reassessed every month, applied for and managed entirely online, and paid on a rolling basis rather than one fixed date. The Grant-in-Aid is different again, since it is not a stand-alone grant but extra support added on top of an existing Older Persons, Disability or War Veterans grant.
How to Identify the Right Grant
Most grants are aimed at a specific life situation rather than general hardship. Age generally points you toward the Older Persons Grant, a qualifying disability toward the Disability Grant, caring for a child toward the Child Support, Foster Child or Care Dependency Grant depending on the child’s circumstances, and financial hardship with no other income toward the SRD R370 grant. If you are not sure which applies to you, the eligibility section on each grant page below explains who generally qualifies, or you can confirm directly with SASSA.
