SRD R370 Grant
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly known as the R370 grant, is a monthly payment from SASSA for South Africans facing financial hardship who do not qualify for other social grants and are not otherwise supported. This page explains general eligibility, how to apply, and how payments work. This is general information only — always confirm your personal eligibility with SASSA.
Quick Facts
- Applied for and managed online, separately from other SASSA grants
- For South African citizens, permanent residents, and certain other categories defined by SASSA, aged 18–60
- Subject to an income threshold means test
- Paid on a rolling basis by ID number rather than one fixed date for everyone
- Current amount: up to R370 per month (verify on official SASSA/SRD sources, as amounts can change)
Who May Qualify
This grant is generally aimed at South Africans (and certain other qualifying residents) between 18 and 60 years old who are unemployed or have very low income, are not receiving another SASSA grant, and are not receiving unemployment insurance (UIF) payments. Exact income thresholds are set by SASSA and are not listed here to avoid outdated figures.
How to Apply for the SRD R370 Grant
- Go to the official SASSA SRD website.
This is the same portal used to check your status later, so it helps to bookmark it for future visits. - Apply using your South African ID number or the relevant document number for your status.
Asylum seekers and special permit holders from certain countries use a separate document number instead of a South African ID number. - SASSA verifies your identity and checks your details against other databases (income, other grants, UIF).
This automated check is why some applications take longer than others, especially if your information doesn’t immediately match another database. - You’ll receive a status result online, and can check it again each month as SASSA re-verifies eligibility.
An “approved” result confirms the decision for that month, but a separate payment date is not always shown immediately afterward. - If approved, payment follows SASSA’s rolling SRD payment schedule.
Because the SRD grant is paid on a rolling basis, keep your registered banking details and mobile number up to date to avoid a delay in receiving funds.
Payment Information
Unlike other SASSA grants, the SRD grant is generally not paid to everyone on the same date — SASSA pays it on a rolling basis, often organised by the last digits of your ID number, over an extended window each month. Visit our Payment Dates page for the latest confirmed SRD payment information.
Common Mistakes That Delay an SRD Application
Many delays and declines happen for avoidable reasons rather than because an applicant is actually ineligible. Keep the following in mind before and after you apply:
- Using the wrong mobile number: the number linked to your application is how SASSA sends status updates and the one-time PIN for changes, so an old or incorrect number can block your entire application.
- Not checking your status monthly: SRD eligibility is reassessed each month, so a status that was approved previously can change, and missing a decline notice means you may miss the appeal window.
- Ignoring outdated banking details: if your registered bank account is closed or incorrect, an approved payment can fail even though your status shows approved.
- Sharing your ID number or PIN with unofficial sources: only enter these details on the official SASSA SRD website. Scammers sometimes pose as agents who can speed up an application for a fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to reapply every month?
You don’t need to submit a brand-new application every month, but SASSA re-checks your eligibility (income, other grants, database checks) each cycle, so your status can change from month to month.
What can I do if my SRD status shows I was declined?
You can submit an appeal through the official SASSA/SRD channels. See our appeals guidance for general steps on how the appeal process works.
